"Blowing out someone else's candle won't make yours shine any brighter" - Unknown

Never put others down when you want to make yourself feel better. It's probably one of the most awful things to do because you are literally tearing someone else apart just to bring you 'happiness' and that's just plain wrong. Do other things to make you feel better about yourself which doesn't include hurting others. I always find it's usually jealousy that causes people to do this, but even though the green-eyed monster is a tricky little thing, you should always try and suppress it and move on.
P.S. - I don't have a twin, both people are me in the photo (:

Currently in Rome right now! It's lovely here and i'm really enjoying the weather (i'm getting so tanned it's unreal!) I've taken many pictures (the apartment i'm staying at is good for photography) and also the city is something very beautiful too which I have taken many shots of as well (: I'll still be here another week until I fly back to the UK.

Actually depending on the perception it does, or appears to, and herein lies the problem within humanity. If you have two candles in a dark room blowing one out brings greater focus to the other creating an illusion of greater brightness AND this is why humanity often does things as this whether because of jealousy, greed or envy. What needs to be understood it only appears brighter when eyes are covered/blinded by the above mentioned but in actuality the flame remains the same. I also agree with how you state it too. Lovely work Erin, almost as lovely as you are as a person.

PS. The way I am stating it it is kind of how someone buts someone else down so they feel better about themselves. In reality they only make their own karmic situation worse, though they may not see it in that way.

I had a period in my life where I would do that, and for the moment it did feel better. But when I realized how hurt some people got I got that feeling in my stomach. Like you ate something bad.

Great picture!

Cause both flames are sharing the same levels of oxygen in the atmosphere, put one out and the other revives all the oxygen causing more combustion and the candle burns brighter

hmmmmm interesting

kind of like when one group or organization wipes out another, that group survives can now use the land that the other group occupied to expand

This piece would be perfect for a project we are developing -- an online gallery for artists who have been bullied or who explore the theme of bullying in their work. It's called the You Will Rise Project. Check it out here: youwillriseproject.com and read the "Submit Work" section for details about sharing your work on our site. Thanks!

This reminds me of the quote: 'Thousands of candles can be lighted from a single candle, and the life of the single candle will not be shortened.' Love

This image has such a brilliant and strong meaning. Clap Thank you for sharing this most beautiful art friend..... Hug

Technically it does. In contrast to the now dimmer lighting in the room/hall/planet, only if it's just 0,00000001% in comparison to the lighting before, you have the impression that your candle shines brighter. Single light sources and their shininess look dimmer to the eye with a higher amount of light and light sources overall.

Maybe you should have phrased it: "Blowing out someone else's candle won't make the place (or other synonym for room/atmosphere/place/premise) any brighter"

Now it's even more positive because it's not twice the cynical statement and adds a hint of concern for the overall atmosphere and well-being of a group/team/humanity.
